Education Grant WinnerSusan Galvez

Being able to learn financial literacy at a young age is oftentimes overlooked, but if students are given the opportunity, it can be a fun learning experience while also getting ahead of the game as they get older. And, of course, going through the payday emotions for the first time is an exhilarating moment for kids.

Susan Galvez, educator at Big Country Elementary, sought a chance for her students to be immersed into financial literacy, have an opportunity to gain essential knowledge, and harness fiscal responsibility.. Thanks to Power of the Dollar® members, she was awarded a $1,000 grant in December 2024 for her “They Work Hard for the Money” idea, which she then used to purchase fake money kits and banking items, and prizes such as stuffed animals, candy, and games, which will continue to get restocked.

“It’s just been a process,” said Galvez. “We started with cashing a check and what that means, and discussing what income means in general. I just try to make it as realistic as possible so they will be more prepared when they do get into the workforce, they’ll know exactly what to do.”

Using an online banking platform called Bankaroo, Ms. Galvez’s students can manage their finances and learn how to be responsible with their imitation funds. In her classroom, she has a bookshelf with different aforementioned items they can choose to buy with their money. What is probably the most heartwarming display of compassion within this whole experience has been her students’ willingness to use their money for others, gifting to their friends and family!

“I’ve had a lot of kids have grown because now they know that’s how they make money, so they want to do more,” she said. “In that they find confidence. They are very caring about their siblings and their friends, and so they try to do a lot for them. If they see them upset, they try to buy something for them to cheer ‘em up. Even though they see how hard it is to make their money, they still want to spend it on them.”
